AFEC

ATHLETE FRIENDLY EDUCATION CENTRES

This is your opportunity to connect your school with other like minded schools around the work, benefit your student-athletes in the process and ensure better links with sporting organisations globally. Athlete Friendly Education Centres (AFEC) is an international accreditation mark for schools and educational institutions who support student-athletes to achieve their education and sporting goals. We like to think of these as ‘passion pathways’.

Our accredited schools provide flexible learning pathways to student-athletes with policies and procedures as well as excellent support services. They provide the opportunity for student-athletes to continue to remain equally committed to both sporting and academic commitments.

Once accredited, on going support is provided through professional development, resources and initiatives provided through WAoS as well are our global network of schools and broader opportunities with WAoS partners.

The accreditation process itself provides the school the opportunity to reviews its own polices and procedures. Accredited schools form a global network, connecting with each other and sharing experiences and best practice.

With the use of the AFEC mark, schools can provide a level of differentiation and the potential the ability to attract student-athletes to their school communities. It also provides opportunities to extend local and national connections in the sports industry.

Once accredited, schools have access to specialized professional development teachers in relation to education provision for student-athletes. WAoS also develops inititatives and provides a growing pool resources for its schools.

For schools that are also IB World Schools, recognised student-athletes in high performance pathways also have additional extended study option for either the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme.

BENEFITS OF THE ACCREDITATION

Schools apply to become AFEC accredited for many reasons but generally its because they are looking to provide student-athletes with the best opportunities to be able to better balance both sporting and education commitments. These schools realise that for these students both sport and school are equally important and through flexible learning pathways, support services and communication structures put into place, this is possible. These students are then able to develop and nurture a passion and excellence in sports and remain committed to academic studies which will enable to become informed global citizens of the future. The accreditation framework developed by WAoS assists schools deliver this opportunity to its student-athletes.

WHAT SCHOOLS SHOULD APPLY FOR THE AFEC ACCERDITATION?

Following receipt of a school's expression of interest form, schools will be allocated an assessment team for the duration of the accreditation process. WAoS is fortunate to have available Olympians as AFEC Assessors who will form part of these teams.

Through relationships with the likes of the World Olympians Association, WAoS has trained and certified Olympians to fulfil an important role in the assessment of schools to be athlete friendly. Olympians can provide a perspective through the personal experience of being a student-athlete, which provides unique and tangible insights for schools.

  • Utilise various tools and techniques to produce a student-athlete services plan
  • Reflect on the unique requirements of a high-performing student-athlete in terms of maintaining a dual career and the support structures required for success
  • Identify ways in which AFEC schools can develop effective partnerships, at both the local and national level within the sporting community
  • Define the curriculum requirements to meet the dual career requirements of a student-athlete
  • Reflect on current communication structures and how these can be improved in their school

OLYMPIAN EMPOWERMENT COACHING PROGRAMME

Many schools that WAoS works with has expressed an interest in establishing a relationship with Olympian athletes who may provide additional support to young aspiring athletes in the school’s community.

WAoS has created a self-sustaining empowering coaching programme for student-athletes and AFEC schools by providing and managing a platform to connect trained Olympians with aspiring student-athletes.

Trained Olympian Empowerment Coaches are guiding and advising student-athletes from AFEC schools through interactive sessions on specific themes.
