World Academy of Sport (WAoS) closed out 2021 with a successful accreditation of International School of Monaco (ISM) to join the Athlete Friendly Education Centre (AFEC) network. The Olympian AFEC Assessors were impressed by the support that ISM offers to their student-athletes and their commitment to developing further opportunities will be extremely beneficial to their student-athletes.
ISM is a diverse and vibrant international school located on Port Hercule in Monaco. Founded in 1994, the school welcomes now over 700 students aged 3 to 18 years old, drawn from over 50 nationalities. With an extensive range of extracurricular activities that complement their academically rigorous curriculum, ISM focuses on nurturing and strengthening independent learning in an environment that helps students become well-balanced, confident, and inspired by a love of learning and inquiry.
With this accreditation and the WAoS relationship with the International Baccalaureate, student-athletes at ISM will have the option to study the IBDP or IBCP over three years. ISM has also agreed to offer its students the opportunity to study the CRS, International Sport Management as part of the IBCP framework. Offered by WAoS in partnership with Federation University, students interested in a career in the sports industry will have an opportunity to study courses such as Introduction to International Sport Management and Sport Performance Management.
Stuart Bryan, Director at ISM, commented on this achievement: “The school now joins an elite group of institutions worldwide to have received this accreditation, which enables ISM to provide student-athletes with the best possible opportunities to be able to balance both sporting and education commitments. This prestigious membership also brings collaboration opportunities for our students with world-famous athletes, and we look forward to more opportunities to develop these ties in the future.”
Philippe Waeffler OLY, based in Monaco, praised the accreditation of a school in his area: “I believe becoming an AFEC accredited school will allow the International School of Monaco to strengthen their excellent efforts they are already doing to support their student-athletes. To formalize and activate existing relationships with top clubs and facilities will bring many benefits for the students. From my own experience having worked at an International School in the region and still living in the Monaco area, I am looking forward to the new opportunities for future talents being offered.”
Joslyn Hoyte-Smith OLY, Olympian AFEC Assessor from the United Kingdom, highlighted the great leadership and environment that are available to ISM students: “I was delighted to see the enthusiasm from the director of the school, Stuart Bryan, in leading his staff to support the students. The experience he brings from previous schools is clearly visible, creating the appropriate environment and opportunities for the students to reach their maximum potential. In conversation with the student-athletes, there is a sense of pride to be a member of the school and an acknowledgment for the support received.”
The WAoS team is looking forward to working with ISM as an accredited AFEC in order to further enhance the support in place for their student-athletes and provide them with unique opportunities.
