International School of Brescia (ISB) becomes the second Athlete Friendly Education Centre (AFEC) accredited in Italy and the 29th AFEC institution. ISB joins the growing AFEC network who provides flexible learning pathways to student-athletes enabling them to succeed in both sports and academics.
ISB is a fully inclusive school who believes that every child should be supported to reach their full potential wherever possible. Therefore, becoming AFEC accredited aligns with their vision and their commitment to maximise the potential of their students.
With continuing restrictions due to Covid-19, the Olympian AFEC Assessors could t meet with the school staff and their student-athletes virtually and were extremely happy with how committed and open-minded the staff team were. Penny Garner, Head of School at ISB, shared her thoughts on the virtual AFEC accreditation visit and explained what this accreditation means for the school: “I really appreciated the feedback that we have received from WAoS and the Olympian AFEC Assessors about what we are doing well, but most importantly the recommendations to improve in some areas. We are looking forward to integrating these ideas into our school strategic planning. ISB is very excited to become AFEC accredited and continue to support student-athletes and include them as much as possible in our school community.”
The three Olympian AFEC Assessors shared their experience of working with ISB through the accreditation visit:
Riccardo Mazzetti OLY, based near the school, is particularly proud that a second Italian school joined the AFEC network: “During the AFEC accreditation visit, I have met with a great staff team, deeply motivated to help student-athletes in their challenges of studying while being on the road for extended periods of time because of their sporting commitments. I am convinced that the effort provided by ISB and their close connection to local sport clubs will create a good synergy and increase the number of student-athletes in the years to come. The fact that this is the second Italian AFEC school accredited in the last few months gives me hope that people in my country are becoming aware of the importance of the dual career.”
Shelley Rudman OLY, based in the United Kingdom, noted the exciting new facilities that student-athletes will soon benefit from at ISB: “I was very impressed with ISB and their enthusiasm and support towards the student-athletes during the assessment. The build of the new sports facilities is very exciting and will allow for many more sporting opportunities. It is fantastic to have them onboard as an AFEC school.”
And finally, Philipp Waeffler OLY, currently based in France, sees a bright future for ISB: “I think that ISB will benefit from the AFEC accreditation by having the possibility to position itself to attract and support student-athletes on their dual career pathways and offering flexible and professional education along sporting needs better. The AFEC accreditation will help the school strengthen their existing strong relationship with motorsport and tennis and develop it into a unique selling point.”
Congratulations to the International School Brescia! WAoS looks forward to working with ISB and help them support their student-athletes in optimising their balance between sports and studies.
