World Academy of Sport (WAoS) is thrilled to announce that St. George's International School, Switzerland, is now an accredited Athlete Friendly Education Centre. The school joins our global network of like-minded schools committed to providing flexible learning pathways and specialised services to student-athletes.
Michael Cary, Deputy Managing Director at World Academy of Sport, says:
“We are delighted to welcome St. George’s International School to our AFEC schools network. The school brings yet another active and engaged community into the network which further enhances the depth and breadth of AFEC schools around the world. The innovative approaches the school has implemented provide a great example of how student-athletes are supported in reaching their academic and sporting dreams. We are looking forward to collaborating with such an inspiring school and to supporting student-athletes in reaching both their academic and sporting dreams.”
St. George’s is a vibrant international school with students from no less than 60 different nations that come together to form a diverse and inspiring community of young people. The school was opened in 1927 to create a centre of excellence that provides for and cares for everyone within its community. Sports at St. George's plays a key element in the daily lives of all students with the school recognising and supporting the commitment required from students in practising sports at an elite level. Sport Études is a bespoke programme for students who demonstrate passion and commitment to sporting activity. It provides a balanced structure between the development of particular talents and academic life.
Michael Gillan, from St. George’s International School, shares his thoughts on the schools experience of going through the AFEC accreditation process:
“Our Sport Études programme has grown over the past couple of years but it was clear that AFEC accreditation would help us to develop this. The process was well-explained and open and we quickly built up a great relationship with the WAoS team. Although it is time consuming gathering all the documentation, it allowed us to review the procedures we have in place. We were then given great advice on how we could develop these procedures and improve our existing support structures for our student-athletes. It was unfortunate that the accreditation team could not visit in person for us to show our beautiful campus, but the online day worked well and the friendly and supportive team gave us a real boost to move forward as an AFEC. The highlight of the day was for our students who were able to meet such high achieving athletes on the accreditation team and be inspired through their discussions. It is clear that the accreditation process is just the beginning of a close and long term relationship between schools and the WAoS and we are really looking forward to being part of the group.”
David Harte, Olympian AFEC Assessor, comments his experience as part of the Assessment Team and shares his view of the school:
“Prior to our official virtual visit, it was clear by examining the Sport Études programme and other necessary documentation that St. George's International School had student-athletes' best interests at heart. Supportive, knowledgeable and creative staff, enthusiastic and talented student-athletes combined with excellent facilities made our virtual assessment a pleasure to be a part of.”
The team at WAoS is looking forward to working with St. George’s International School as an accredited AFEC in order to further enhance its already excellent programmes to its student-athletes and provide even further opportunities in the near future.
